Suma (Hebanthe eriantha, long sold as Pfaffia paniculata) is Brazilian ginseng, a sprawling, woody-based vine of the amaranth family, Amaranthaceae, native to the Atlantic forest of Brazil and neighboring Paraguay, Peru and Ecuador. It climbs and trails for several meters with opposite, oval, pointed leaves and loose panicles of small whitish, woolly flowers. The large, deeply branched, fibrous root system, pale brown outside and whitish within, is the harvested part and earned the plant its Portuguese name para tudo, "for everything". We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
