About Rhus coriaria

Sumac (Rhus coriaria) is the Sicilian or tanner's sumac, a deciduous shrub of the cashew family, Anacardiaceae, native to the Mediterranean and the Middle East from Sicily to Iran, where it grows on dry rocky hillsides. It reaches 2 to 4 meters with velvety reddish stems, pinnate leaves of toothed oval leaflets that turn scarlet in autumn, and dense upright panicles of small greenish-white flowers. The fruit is a cluster of small, hairy, deep red drupes with a sharply sour, lemony taste, ground as a spice across the Levant and Turkey. We extract the dried berry.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
