Sumac Berry (Rhus Coriaria) Tincture

Both are liquid extracts of the same Rhus coriaria berry; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The berry inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.

No to both, and the distinction matters. Our product is Rhus coriaria, the edible culinary sumac of the Mediterranean and Middle East, grown and harvested in Turkey. Poison sumac is a completely different plant, Toxicodendron vernix (formerly Rhus vernix), a shrub of North American swamps with white or greenish berries that, like poison ivy and poison oak, contains urushiol and causes a severe skin rash; it is never used as a spice or a supplement. North America also has its own edible sumacs with red berries - smooth sumac (Rhus glabra) and staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina), the source of the traditional sumac-ade drink - but they are different species from ours and are not what is in this bottle. All true sumacs belong to the cashew family (Anacardiaceae), so anyone allergic to cashews, mangoes or pistachios should avoid them. We label this product clearly by botanical name (Rhus coriaria), plant part (berry) and origin so there is no confusion with poison sumac or with the American species.

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, tea or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Many people enjoy it in water for its tart, lemony character; because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water also softens the taste. Do not exceed the label serving, and read the safety information below. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight, and keep out of reach of children.

Sumac berry is enjoyed as a food and spice and is generally well tolerated, but a concentrated liquid extract should be used sensibly and not taken above the suggested serving. Allergy: sumac is in the cashew family (Anacardiaceae), so do not use it if you are allergic to cashews, mangoes, pistachios or related plants, and stop use if you notice itching, swelling or a rash. Tannins: the berries are naturally rich in tannins, so strong preparations can taste astringent and may upset a sensitive stomach; taken long term, tannins can reduce iron absorption, so keep to short courses. Pregnancy and nursing: food amounts of the spice are considered fine, but avoid concentrated extracts unless a practitioner advises otherwise. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.
