About Hierochloe odorata

Sweetgrass (Anthoxanthum nitens, long known as Hierochloe odorata) is a perennial grass of the grass family, Poaceae, native to the cool northern regions of North America and Eurasia, where it grows in wet meadows, marsh edges and lake shores. It spreads by creeping rhizomes into loose stands 30 to 60 cm tall, with glossy, flat leaves that are shiny on the underside and open, golden-brown panicles in early summer. The leaves smell strongly of vanilla from coumarin, especially when dried, and are braided by many Indigenous nations for ceremony and basketry. We extract the dried braid.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
