Usnea (Usnea barbata) is old man's beard or beard lichen, not a plant but a lichen of the family Parmeliaceae, a partnership between a fungus and a green alga, found hanging from the branches of conifers and hardwoods in humid forests across North America, Europe and Asia. It forms pale grey-green, tufted or pendulous strands up to 20 cm long that branch repeatedly like a tangled beard; pulling a strand apart reveals a white, elastic central cord, the feature that separates Usnea from look-alike lichens. The whole body is called a thallus. We extract the dried thallus.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
