Kidney Boost Alcohol-Free Drops
Kidney Boost Alcohol-Free Glycerite, Chanca Piedra Leaf, Cranberry Berry, Dandelion Root, Horsetail Herb, Usnea Thallus, Uva Ursi LeafKidney Boost Alcohol-Free Drops
This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of six ingredients extracted together in equal parts: four herbs, a berry and a lichen. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product for short courses only - several of its ingredients carry serious cautions, so please read the safety information below before use.
- Chanca piedra, leaf - Phyllanthus niruri leaf (Phyllanthaceae)
- Cranberry, berry - Vaccinium macrocarpon fruit (Ericaceae)
- Dandelion, root - Taraxacum officinale root (Asteraceae)
- Horsetail, herb - Equisetum arvense aerial parts (Equisetaceae)
- Usnea, thallus - Usnea barbata lichen (Parmeliaceae) - contains usnic acid
- Uva ursi, leaf - Arctostaphylos uva-ursi leaf (Ericaceae) - short-course herb
- Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - liquid drops. Other ingredients: vegetable glycerin, purified water
- Origin: Responsibly sourced botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- Chanca piedra - a small annual herb of the Amazon and tropical Asia with tiny round fruits under its leaves; known in South America by a traditional folk name; the leaf is used.
- Cranberry - the tart red berry of a low evergreen vine of North American bogs, the same fruit used for juice and sauce.
- Dandelion - the long taproot of the familiar yellow-flowered lawn weed, roasted in some countries as a coffee substitute.
- Horsetail - a primitive, leafless plant with jointed, hollow stems, a survivor from the age of the dinosaurs.
- Usnea - "old man's beard", a pale grey-green lichen that hangs from branches in cool, damp forests; a partnership of a fungus and an alga, not a plant. It contains usnic acid (see the safety information).
- Uva ursi - the leathery evergreen leaf of bearberry, a creeping shrub of northern heaths; it contains arbutin, which is why herbal monographs limit it to short courses.
Why the alcohol-free drops
The six dried ingredients are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the bitterness of the herbs.
What is a glycerite?
A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the ingredients. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a glass of water and drink it with food, up to the frequency shown on the label, and drink plenty of water through the day. Use it for no more than one week at a time and no more than five courses a year. Do not exceed the label serving. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.
Drops or tincture?
If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same six-ingredient blend is available as Kidney Boost Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The ingredients and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read carefully before use
This blend contains usnea (usnic acid), uva ursi and horsetail. It is for short courses only, and it is not for people with liver or kidney disease. Please read before use.
- Liver: usnea contains usnic acid, which has caused severe liver injury, including liver failure, in people taking concentrated usnic-acid supplements. Never exceed the label serving and use only in short courses. Stop immediately and see a doctor if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, abdominal pain, nausea or unusual fatigue. Do not use if you have liver disease, drink alcohol heavily or take medicines that affect the liver.
- Kidney disease: do not use - horsetail and uva ursi are not suitable for people with kidney disease.
- See a doctor: pain in the side or lower back, blood in the urine, fever, swelling or changes in urination need medical diagnosis. Do not use this or any herbal product in place of medical care.
- Short courses only: uva ursi contains arbutin, which the body converts to hydroquinone. Use this blend for no more than one week at a time and no more than five courses a year.
- Age: not for anyone under 18.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
- Diuretics, blood pressure and blood sugar: horsetail, dandelion and chanca piedra increase urine output and may lower potassium, blood pressure and blood sugar. Consult your doctor if you take diuretics, blood-pressure or diabetes medication, lithium or heart medicines.
- Blood thinners: chanca piedra and cranberry may affect clotting - consult your doctor if you take warfarin or similar.
- Vitamin B1: horsetail contains an enzyme that breaks down thiamine - another reason not to use this blend continuously.
- Gallstones: avoid if you have gallstones or a bile-duct obstruction (dandelion).
- Allergies: avoid if you are allergic to lichens, to daisy-family plants such as ragweed, or to aspirin and salicylates.
- If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
