Uva Ursi (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) is bearberry or kinnikinnick, a prostrate evergreen shrub of the heath family, Ericaceae, native across the northern latitudes of North America, Europe and Asia, where it carpets dry sandy soils, rocky slopes and open pine woods. Its woody, trailing stems root as they spread into mats 10 to 30 cm tall, with small, thick, glossy, spoon-shaped leaves that are leathery and evergreen. Clusters of small pink-tinged white, urn-shaped flowers in spring are followed by dry, mealy, bright red berries that persist into winter. We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
