Wood Betony (Betonica officinalis, long known as Stachys officinalis) is a perennial of the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to Europe, western Asia and North Africa, where it grows in meadows, open woods, heaths and hedge banks on well-drained soil. It forms a basal rosette of oblong, heart-based, bluntly toothed, wrinkled leaves and sends up a slender, almost leafless square stem 30 to 60 cm tall, topped by a dense, interrupted spike of reddish-purple two-lipped flowers in midsummer. The whole plant is faintly aromatic. We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
