Wu Jia Pi (Eleutherococcus nodiflorus, long listed as Eleutherococcus gracilistylus) is a deciduous shrub of the ivy family, Araliaceae, native to central and southern China, where it grows in thickets and forest edges on hillsides and along streams. It reaches 2 to 3 meters with slender, arching, sparsely prickly branches and palmate leaves of five glossy, finely toothed leaflets. Small greenish-yellow flowers in umbels are followed by round black berries. The root bark is peeled, rolled and dried as thin greyish-brown quills with a faint aromatic scent. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
