Frequently Asked Questions about Wu Jia Pi Extract
What is Wu Jia Pi / Acanthopanax (Eleutherococcus gracilistylus) root bark extract?
Wu Jia Pi is a liquid extract of the dried root bark of Eleutherococcus gracilistylus (formerly and still often called Acanthopanax gracilistylus), a spiny shrub of the Araliaceae family. In traditional Chinese herbalism it is called Wu Jia Pi - literally "bark of five additions" - and more precisely Nan Wu Jia Pi, or Southern Wu Jia Pi. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole root-bark liquid extract carrying the bark's natural constituents, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. Two important identity points: this is the Southern Wu Jia Pi (Eleutherococcus gracilistylus), NOT the toxic Northern Wu Jia Pi (Periploca sepium, which contains cardiac glycosides); and it is a different species from Eleuthero, also called Ci Wu Jia or Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus). Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Eleutherococcus gracilistylus root bark; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is this the same as Eleuthero (Siberian ginseng)? And what about the "toxic" Wu Jia Pi?
Two common points of confusion, both worth clearing up. First, Eleuthero: Wu Jia Pi (Eleutherococcus gracilistylus) is in the same genus as Eleuthero / Ci Wu Jia / Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), but they are different species used differently - Eleuthero is the well-known adaptogen root, which we sell separately, while Wu Jia Pi is the root bark of a different species. Second, the "toxic Wu Jia Pi": historically the name "Wu Jia Pi" has been used for two very different plants. Ours is Southern Wu Jia Pi (Nan Wu Jia Pi), the genuine Eleutherococcus gracilistylus. There is also a "Northern Wu Jia Pi" (Xiang Jia Pi, Periploca sepium bark) that is a different, toxic plant containing cardiac glycosides. Ours is the Eleutherococcus species, and we identity-test our raw material; it is not Periploca.
How do I use Wu Jia Pi / Acanthopanax root bark liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Wu Jia Pi right for everyone? Safety information.
Southern Wu Jia Pi (Eleutherococcus gracilistylus) has a good traditional safety record and is rated Class 1 (the safest category) by the American Herbal Products Association when it is the correct species - which is why identity matters, since the unrelated "Northern Wu Jia Pi" (Periploca sepium) is toxic; ours is the genuine Eleutherococcus. A few cautions still apply: do NOT use it if you have high blood pressure without medical advice (the German Commission E notes this); do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing; and keep to the suggested serving without exceeding it. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
