Xian Ling Pi (Epimedium brevicornu) is a barrenwort or horny goat weed, a low rhizomatous perennial of the barberry family, Berberidaceae, native to the mountains of northern and central China, where it grows in moist forest understorey and shaded ravines in Shaanxi, Shanxi, Gansu and Sichuan. It forms clumps 20 to 50 cm tall of wiry stems bearing leaves divided into three, then into heart-shaped, spiny-edged, papery leaflets that often take on a reddish tint. In spring airy sprays of small white flowers with short spurs rise above the foliage. We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
