What is Horny Goat Weed / Xian Ling Pi (Epimedium brevicornum) extract?
This is a dietary supplement made from the dried aerial herb of Epimedium brevicornum, a perennial plant in the barberry family (Berberidaceae). The plant carries several English common names, including horny goat weed, barrenwort and bishop's hat, and in traditional Chinese herbalism it is known as Xian Ling Pi or Yin Yang Huo. What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Epimedium brevicornum herb; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Is this the garden epimedium, or the same as icariin?
Neither. The genus Epimedium is widely grown as an ornamental shade-garden perennial, often sold under the names barrenwort or bishop's hat, and most gardening information about epimedium refers to those decorative plants. Our product is a herbal liquid extract made from the dried aerial herb of Epimedium brevicornum, prepared as a dietary supplement. It is also not icariin: icariin is a single flavonoid compound isolated from the plant and sold on its own, whereas our extract is made from the whole herb and carries its natural range of constituents. It is worth noting too that this herb is officially obtained from several closely related species - Epimedium brevicornum, E. sagittatum, E. koreanum, E. pubescens and others - so we state our species explicitly on the label. We label every product by full botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion between the herbal extract, the ornamental plant, and isolated compounds.
How do I use this liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner.
