Xu Chang Qing (Cynanchum paniculatum) is a slender perennial of the dogbane family, Apocynaceae, native to China, Japan and Korea, where it grows on sunny grassy slopes, in open woods and along field edges. It rises 30 to 60 cm on unbranched, erect stems with pairs of narrow, lanceolate, almost linear leaves, and in summer bears loose clusters of small, yellow-green, star-shaped flowers followed by slender horn-like pods that split to release silky-tufted seeds. The thin, fibrous, yellowish-brown roots carry a distinct scent of vanilla and wintergreen from paeonol. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
