Cynanchum is perennial herb or subshrub, often growing from rhizomes. The leaves are usually oppositely arranged and sometimes are borne on petioles. The inflorescences and flowers come in a variety of shapes. Like other species of the milkweed family, these plants bear follicles, which are podlike dry fruits. These species are found throughout the tropics and subtropics. Several species also grow in temperate regions.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Xu Chang Qing Extract
What is Xu Chang Qing / paniculate swallowwort (Cynanchum paniculatum) root extract?
Xu Chang Qing is the Chinese name for the dried root of Cynanchum paniculatum, a plant of the Apocynaceae family also called paniculate swallowwort; in pharmacy it is known as Radix Cynanchi Paniculati. Its main active compound is paeonol (the same aromatic compound found in tree-peony bark). This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried root, taken by the drop. A couple of points matter: it is a blood-moving herb, so it is not to be used during pregnancy, and paeonol can be mildly sedating. Please read the safety notes below carefully.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cynanchum paniculatum root; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The root inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is Xu Chang Qing the same as Bai Qian or Bai Wei?
No - they are three different Cynanchum species, and it is easy to mix them up. Xu Chang Qing is Cynanchum paniculatum, which we carry here. Bai Qian is Cynanchum stauntonii and Bai Wei is Cynanchum atratum - both listed separately, and both are also Cynanchum roots with different traditional uses. Because Cynanchum species are often confused in the herb trade, we label ours clearly as Cynanchum paniculatum (paniculate swallowwort).
How do I use Xu Chang Qing / paniculate swallowwort liquid extract?
Because this is a blood-moving herb and its main compound can be mildly sedating, use it under the guidance of a qualified practitioner and keep to short-term use. Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops in 2 oz of water, up to three times a day, or as directed by your practitioner. Do NOT use it during pregnancy. Avoid combining it with sedatives or alcohol, and take care with driving if it makes you drowsy. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store cool and dry, away from light, and shake before use.
