Yu Jin (Curcuma aromatica) is the wild or aromatic turmeric, a rhizomatous perennial of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae, native to India, Sri Lanka and southern China, cultivated in Sichuan and Zhejiang. It grows about 1 meter tall with broad, oblong leaves, often faintly hairy beneath, and a spring flower spike with pink upper bracts and pale yellow flowers that appears before the leaves. The rhizome is pale yellow to orange inside with a camphor-like fragrance, and its egg-shaped lateral tubers are the part known as yu jin. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
