What is Yu Jin / Wild Turmeric (Curcuma aromatica) root extract?
Yu Jin is the Chinese name for the dried root (tuber) of Curcuma aromatica, a plant of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) known in English as wild turmeric or aromatic turmeric; in pharmacy the root is Radix Curcumae. This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried root. It is a close relative of common turmeric, but it is a different species and a different plant part (the root, not the rhizome). Two safety points matter most: it is a blood-moving herb, so it is not for use in pregnancy, and it can add to the effect of blood-thinning medication. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Curcuma aromatica root; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol; no sugar is added. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The root inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
How is Yu Jin different from turmeric, E Zhu and mango ginger?
They are all in the Curcuma genus but are different species and, importantly, sometimes different plant parts. Yu Jin is the ROOT (tuber) of Curcuma aromatica (wild turmeric). Common turmeric is the RHIZOME of Curcuma longa - a different species and a different part. E Zhu is Curcuma zedoaria and mango ginger is Curcuma amada. In Chinese medicine the tuberous root (Yu Jin) and the rhizome have different traditional roles even when they come from related plants. We label ours clearly as the root of Curcuma aromatica so it is not confused with the others.
How do I use Yu Jin / Wild Turmeric liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Keep to short-term use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
