Zi Su Ye (Perilla frutescens) is perilla or shiso, an aromatic annual of the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to China and India and widely grown in East Asia as a culinary herb and oilseed. It grows 60 to 100 cm tall with square stems and broad, oval, coarsely toothed leaves that may be green or deep purple,. Spikes of small white to purple flowers in late summer are followed by tiny brown-grey nutlets, the perilla seeds. We extract the dried leaf, fruit and seed separately.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
