Perilla Leaf (Zi Su Ye) Tincture, Perilla Frutescens

Both are liquid extracts of the same Perilla frutescens leaf; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.

Neither, though both are closely related. The fresh perilla leaves sold as shiso in Japanese cooking or kkaennip in Korean cooking come from this same species, but they are a food ingredient - fresh leaves used to wrap meat, garnish sushi, or flavour pickles. Our product is different in form: it is a concentrated liquid extract made from the dried leaf and prepared as a dietary supplement, not a culinary green. It is also a different plant part from perilla seed and perilla fruit, which in Chinese herbalism carry their own name, Zi Su Zi, and which we sell as separate products - the leaf and the seed are treated as distinct herbs, so they should be chosen deliberately. One more point worth knowing: perilla occurs in different chemical types, and the type used in cooking and in herbal practice is the one rich in perillaldehyde. We label the product clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion between the leaf extract, the culinary leaf, and the seed.

Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. The tincture and the alcohol-free glycerite are used the same way; choose the one that fits your preference.

Perilla leaf is widely eaten as a food in East Asia and is generally well tolerated, but perilla is also a recognised food allergen for some people, so anyone with a known perilla, sesame, or mint-family sensitivity should be cautious and start with a small amount. As with any concentrated herbal extract, it is best not to exceed the suggested serving size. Use during pregnancy and nursing only under the supervision of a practitioner. Excessive amounts may affect alertness, so use care when driving or operating machinery. This product is formulated for adults; it is not intended for children or for animals.
