Frequently Asked Questions about Hoodia Extract
What is Hoodia (Hoodia gordonii)?
Hoodia is a spiny succulent plant native to the Kalahari desert of Southern Africa, botanically Hoodia gordonii. It belongs to the dogbane family (Apocynaceae) and, despite often being called a "cactus," it is not a true cactus at all - it is a succulent. The part used here is the plant itself, the fleshy aerial stems. Hoodia has long been known to the San, the indigenous peoples of Southern Africa. Our raw material is authentic, wild-harvested Hoodia gordonii; this matters, because a great deal of material sold as hoodia in the marketplace is adulterated or is not genuine H. gordonii at all. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-plant liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Hoodia gordonii plant; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the plant's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is hoodia a cactus, and how do I know it is authentic?
Two good questions. First, the plant type: hoodia is very often called a cactus - you will even see the name "hoodia cactus" - but it is not a cactus. It is a succulent in the dogbane family (Apocynaceae); it simply has a spiny, cactus-like appearance because it evolved in a hot, dry desert. Second, authenticity: genuine Hoodia gordonii is a protected plant, listed under CITES (the international convention on trade in endangered species), and because it became popular, a large amount of the material sold as hoodia is fake, substituted, or adulterated. We use authentic, correctly identified, wild-harvested Hoodia gordonii from Southern Africa. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Hoodia gordonii) and plant part (plant) so you know exactly what you are getting.
How do I use Hoodia liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Hoodia extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Hoodia is not right for everyone. It may increase heart rate and blood pressure in some people, so use caution and talk with your practitioner before use if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, or take medication for your heart or blood pressure. It may also affect blood sugar, so use caution if you have diabetes or take blood-sugar medication. Do not use during pregnancy or while nursing. It is best not used for prolonged periods. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Hoodia (Hoodia Gordonii) Plant is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur. and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
