Frequently Asked Questions about Jue Ming Zi Extract
What is Jue Ming Zi / Cassia Seed (Cassia obtusifolia) extract?
Jue Ming Zi is the Chinese name for the seed of Cassia obtusifolia (accepted botanical name Senna obtusifolia), a legume-family plant (Fabaceae) known in English as Cassia Seed or Sicklepod; in Chinese herbal tradition the seed is called Cassiae Semen. This is a liquid extract of the dried seed, offered here as a traditional alcohol tincture. The seed naturally contains anthraquinones. It is a botanical extract and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease; please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cassia obtusifolia (Senna obtusifolia) seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, a good choice for those avoiding alcohol. Choose whichever suits you. The seed inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is Jue Ming Zi the same as Sicklepod or Shi Jue Ming?
Jue Ming Zi and Sicklepod are the same plant - Cassia obtusifolia, whose accepted botanical name is Senna obtusifolia; "Jue Ming Zi" is the Chinese name and "Sicklepod" (or Cassia Seed) is the English name. The plant was reclassified from the genus Cassia to Senna, so you may see either binomial. However, Shi Jue Ming is NOT this plant: it is abalone shell (Haliotis), a shell used in Chinese tradition, and despite the similar "Jue Ming" name (both associated with the eyes in tradition) it is a completely different item. This page is the plant seed, Cassia / Senna obtusifolia.
How is Jue Ming Zi extract used?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops shown on the label, in a little water or juice, up to the suggested frequency. Because the seed contains anthraquinones, keep to the suggested serving, do not exceed it, and use it short-term rather than continuously. Because this is an alcohol tincture, it may be diluted in water. Store in a cool, dry place, and keep out of reach of children.
Is Jue Ming Zi safe? Safety information.
Jue Ming Zi (cassia seed) has low acute toxicity, but a few cautions apply. Anthraquinones: the seed contains anthraquinones (such as emodin and aurantio-obtusin) that have a laxative effect and, with heavy or long-term use, may burden the liver, kidneys, and digestive system - so keep to the suggested serving, do not exceed it, and use it short-term rather than continuously. Pregnancy and nursing: avoid use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to infants or children without medical advice. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. This tincture contains alcohol. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
