Frequently Asked Questions about Oriental Garlic Extract
What is Oriental Garlic Seed (Allium tuberosum) extract?
Oriental garlic, botanically Allium tuberosum, is much better known as garlic chives or Chinese chives - a perennial herb of the Amaryllidaceae family with flat, grass-like leaves that give off a garlic-and-onion aroma when crushed, and white flowers in rounded umbels. The part used here is the seed, which in Chinese herbal tradition is called Jiu Zi, sourced from Thailand. We offer the extract in two forms, an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture, both taken by the drop. This is a seed liquid extract. It is not the culinary chive greens people cook with, it is not planting seed sold for the garden, and despite the word "garlic" in the name it is not true garlic (Allium sativum). We label the botanical name (Allium tuberosum) and the plant part (seed) on every page.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Allium tuberosum seed; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the seed's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this garlic chives, true garlic, or planting seed?
None of those exactly, so the species and part matter. This product is the SEED of Allium tuberosum. Allium tuberosum is the plant commonly called garlic chives or Chinese chives, but this is the seed (Jiu Zi in Chinese tradition), not the green leaves that are used as a cooking vegetable. It is also not planting seed sold to grow the plant in a garden - it is a dried seed prepared as a liquid extract. And although its common name is "oriental garlic," it is not true garlic: true garlic is Allium sativum, a different species (the bulb), which we sell separately, along with black garlic (also Allium sativum), chive (Allium schoenoprasum) and onion (Allium cepa). All are in the onion genus Allium but are different species and different plant parts. We print the botanical name and plant part on every page so the exact identity is clear.
How do I use Oriental Garlic Seed liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Oriental Garlic Seed extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.

If you are nursing or taking any medication, consult your physician before use. Keep out of the reach of children. Store as directed on the label.
