Frequently Asked Questions about Lemon Verbena Extract
What is Lemon Verbena (Aloysia citriodora) extract?
Lemon verbena is a deciduous shrub of the verbena family (Verbenaceae), botanically Aloysia citriodora - you will also see it as Aloysia triphylla, and under the older name Lippia citriodora; all three are the same plant. It is native to South America and is grown for its narrow leaves, which carry an intense lemon scent from an aromatic volatile oil containing citral and limonene - simply constituents of the raw material. The part used here is the leaf. Lemon verbena has a long history as a culinary and tea herb. Our extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-leaf liquid extract taken by the drop, not the loose tea and not the essential oil, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Note that despite the name, this is Aloysia, not the genus Verbena.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Aloysia citriodora leaf; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the leaf's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is lemon verbena the same as vervain, lemon balm or lemongrass?
No - and this is the most common confusion, because several unrelated lemon-scented herbs have similar names. Our plant is Aloysia citriodora, lemon verbena, in the genus Aloysia. Vervain and verbena refer to the genus Verbena, which is a different genus altogether; it includes common vervain (Verbena officinalis) and blue vervain (Verbena hastata), and we sell blue vervain as its own separate product. The shared word verbena does not make them the same plant. Lemon balm is Melissa officinalis, a lemon-scented member of the mint family, which we also sell separately; and lemongrass is Cymbopogon citratus, a lemon-scented grass, again a separate product. So four different lemon-scented plants, four different products - if you specifically want one of the others, look for it by name. We label the botanical name (Aloysia citriodora) and plant part (leaf) on every page so there is no mix-up.
How do I use Lemon Verbena liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Lemon Verbena extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Lemon verbena is well tolerated as an everyday tea, but a concentrated liquid extract is more concentrated than a cup of tea, so do not exceed the suggested serving. In traditional use there is a caution against prolonged, heavy use, because the aromatic oil can be irritating in large amounts, so keep to the stated serving. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Lemon Verbena (Aloysia Citriodora) Leaf is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
