Loquat (Eriobotrya Japonica) is an evergreen flowering tree or shrub that belongs to the Rosaceae family and is native to China. It has a short trunk, a rounded crown and lanate twigs. The height of the plant can vary from 3 to 10 m. The leaves are alternately arranged, about 10-25 cm long, dark green, tenacious, coriaceous, with serrated edges and hairy underside. The aromatic white flowers have five petals and are about 2 cm in diameter. They grow in panicles which include 3-10 flowers. The succulent fruits grow in clusters and have round, oval or pear shape. They usually reach about 3-5 cm in length. The fruits can be orange or yellow and their surface can be pubescent or smooth. *

Loquat is a subtropical evergreen tree of the rose family (Rosaceae), botanically Eriobotrya japonica, well known for its sweet orange fruit. This product, however, is made from the LEAF, not the fruit. In traditional Chinese herbalism the loquat leaf is known as Pi Pa Ye. This is a leaf liquid extract, offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from carefully sourced raw material. It is important to know that this is the leaf, which is a different part from the edible loquat fruit that most people know, and also different from the loquat seed. This is a whole-leaf extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Eriobotrya japonica leaf; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the leaf's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Is this the loquat leaf, the fruit, or the seed?

It is the leaf, and this is an important distinction because the loquat tree gives several different parts. Our product is made from the loquat LEAF, known in Chinese herbalism as Pi Pa Ye, dried and made into a liquid extract. This is a different part from the sweet, edible loquat fruit that most people picture, which is eaten fresh or used in jams and drinks; our product is not the fruit. It is also different from the loquat seed or kernel: loquat seeds naturally contain a compound called amygdalin, which can release cyanide, so the seeds are not something to use casually - and, importantly, our product is the leaf, not the seed. Note that loquat leaves have fine hairs on the underside that are traditionally cleaned off before use. Our product is a supplement extract of the leaf, not the fruit, the seed, loquat tea, or the well-known loquat cough syrups.
