Frequently Asked Questions about Maidenhair Fern Extract
What is Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris) herb extract?
Maidenhair Fern is a liquid extract of the dried herb (fronds) of Adiantum capillus-veneris, the Southern maidenhair or Venus hair fern, a plant of the Pteridaceae fern family with a long history in Greek, Roman, Ayurvedic, Chinese and Middle Eastern herbal traditions. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. It is a whole-herb liquid extract carrying the fern's natural constituents, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. Please note two things: this is the herbal EXTRACT of the fern, which is different from the ornamental maidenhair fern kept as a houseplant; and it is a different fern from our Climbing Fern (Lygodium japonicum) and Woolly Fern (Cibotium barometz), which are separate species and plant parts. Please read the safety notes below, especially about pregnancy.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Adiantum capillus-veneris herb; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is this the houseplant, and how is it different from the other ferns you sell?
No - this is a herbal extract, not the potted houseplant. Maidenhair fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris) is popular as an ornamental, but this product is a liquid extract of the dried fern herb, taken by the drop. It is also worth knowing that "fern" covers very different plants: we also sell Climbing Fern (Lygodium japonicum, the spore, used in Chinese herbalism as Hai Jin Sha) and Woolly Fern (Cibotium barometz, the rhizome, known as Gou Ji) - these are entirely different fern species, plant parts and traditions. We label each by botanical name so they are not confused. This one is specifically Adiantum capillus-veneris herb.
How do I use Maidenhair Fern herb liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Maidenhair Fern right for everyone? Safety information.
Maidenhair fern has a long traditional record and is generally regarded as a safe herb at sensible amounts, but a few cautions apply. Most importantly, do NOT use it during pregnancy - it is considered unsafe in pregnancy and has traditionally been used to bring on menstruation, so it is best avoided; avoid it while nursing as well. Taking large amounts may cause nausea or vomiting in some people, so keep to the suggested serving and do not exceed it. Like many ferns, the fresh plant contains an enzyme (thiaminase) that can deplete vitamin B1, but this is destroyed by drying - our extract is made from the dried herb - so this is mainly a reason not to use very large amounts long-term. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
