Maitake and Shiitake Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of two culinary mushrooms extracted together in equal parts and named for its ingredients: maitake, the ruffled hen of the woods, and shiitake, the oak-log mushroom of East Asia. Both are the whole dried fruiting body, not mycelium, and both are also sold on their own. It is a traditional mushroom preparation with a few important cautions - please read the safety information below before use.

  • Maitake, fruiting body - Grifola frondosa mushroom (Meripilaceae) - hen of the woods
  • Shiitake, fruiting body - Lentinula edodes mushroom (Omphalotaceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Cultivated mushrooms from India; responsibly sourced. Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • Maitake - Grifola frondosa forms large, overlapping grey-brown rosettes at the base of oak trees in autumn, which is how it earned the name hen of the woods; in Japan the name maitake means dancing mushroom. The whole cluster is dried and extracted.
  • Shiitake - Lentinula edodes, the brown, umbrella-capped mushroom cultivated on hardwood logs across East Asia for a thousand years and now the second most widely grown mushroom in the world. The dried cap and stem are used.

Why a tincture

The two dried mushrooms are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has an earthy, savory taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same two-mushroom blend is available as Maitake and Shiitake Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The mushrooms and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

Maitake affects blood sugar and blood clotting; shiitake can cause a rash in sensitive people. Please read before use.

  • Blood sugar: maitake can lower blood glucose. If you have diabetes or take blood-sugar-lowering medication, monitor closely and consult your doctor.
  • Blood thinners and surgery: maitake has been reported to raise the effect of warfarin. Do not combine with blood thinners without medical advice, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Rash: shiitake contains lentinan, which in a small number of people causes a streaky, itchy rash (shiitake dermatitis) one to two days after exposure. Stop use and see a doctor if a rash appears.
  • Mushroom allergy: do not use if you are allergic to mushrooms or molds.
  • Immune conditions: both mushrooms contain beta-glucans that act on the immune system. Consult your doctor if you have an autoimmune condition or take immunosuppressant medicines.
  • Blood pressure: maitake may lower it. Use caution with blood-pressure medication.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
  • Age: not for children.
  • Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Maitake and Shiitake Tincture?
This is a two-mushroom liquid blend named for its ingredients: maitake (Grifola frondosa, the hen of the woods) and shiitake (Lentinula edodes), extracted together in equal parts in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. Both are the whole fruiting body - the mushroom itself, not the mycelium. Maitake grows in large, ruffled clusters at the base of oaks and looks like the fluffed feathers of a sitting hen; shiitake is the brown, umbrella-capped mushroom of East Asian cooking, grown on hardwood logs. Each is also sold on its own. It is a liquid mushroom tincture, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - maitake affects blood sugar and blood clotting, and shiitake can cause a rash in sensitive people.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same two mushrooms in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and an earthy, savory taste. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is this made from the mushroom or the mycelium? How is it different from reishi?
From the mushroom. Both maitake and shiitake in this blend are the dried fruiting body - the part you would recognize as a mushroom - rather than mycelium grown on grain, which is what many powdered mushroom products are made from. Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is a different, woody, lacquered bracket fungus that we sell separately and use in other blends; it is not part of this product. Maitake and shiitake are each available as single extracts.
How do I use Maitake and Shiitake Tincture?
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight, and keep out of reach of children.

Mushroom allergy: do not use if you are allergic to mushrooms or molds. Immune conditions: both mushrooms contain beta-glucans that act on the immune system - consult your doctor if you have an autoimmune condition or take immunosuppressant medicines.
