Important safety information - please read before use

Melilot contains coumarin. When the plant is spoiled, moldy or poorly dried, this can turn into dicoumarol, a powerful blood-thinning substance - in fact this is the plant that led to the discovery of the drug warfarin. Please use only under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

  • Bleeding / clotting: do NOT use if you have a bleeding or clotting disorder.
  • Blood thinners: do NOT combine with blood thinners such as warfarin, with anti-platelet medicines, or with other coumarin herbs.
  • Surgery: stop use well before any surgery.
  • Liver: use caution if you have a liver condition.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing.
  • Keep to the suggested serving. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Melilot Extract
What is Melilot (Melilotus officinalis) herb extract?
Melilot is a liquid extract of the dried above-ground herb of Melilotus officinalis, the yellow sweet clover, a legume of the Fabaceae (pea) family. It is named for its sweet, hay-and-vanilla scent, which comes from a natural compound called coumarin. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite, cold-macerated from herb responsibly sourced from the USA and prepared in the USA. Because of its coumarin content, please read the safety notes below carefully.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Melilot herb; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol, the classic cold-maceration method that yields a more concentrated extract. The botanical inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is Melilot the same as red clover or the other coumarin herbs?
No. Melilot is Melilotus officinalis (sweet clover). It is not the same as Red Clover or Crimson Clover, which are Trifolium species - a different genus with a different chemistry (isoflavones rather than coumarin). It does share its coumarin with our Sweet Woodruff (Galium odoratum) and Tonka (Dipteryx odorata), so similar cautions about the blood apply to those. We label ours clearly as Melilotus officinalis.
How do I use Melilot liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. This alcohol-free glycerite has a sweet, hay-like taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and it is best used under professional guidance. Read the safety information below before use.
Is Melilot right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Melilot contains coumarin, and when the plant is spoiled, moldy or poorly dried this can turn into dicoumarol, a powerful blood-thinning substance (this is the plant that led to the discovery of the drug warfarin). For this reason, do NOT use Melilot if you have a bleeding or clotting disorder, and do NOT combine it with blood thinners such as warfarin, with anti-platelet medicines, or with other coumarin herbs. Stop use well before any surgery. Use caution if you have a liver condition. Do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing. Keep to the suggested serving, use it only under the guidance of a qualified practitioner, and if you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store as directed on the label. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
