Frequently Asked Questions about Phaseolus Extract
What is Phaseolus / Adzuki Bean (Vigna angularis) seed extract?
Phaseolus here is the adzuki bean (also spelled azuki), the small red food bean known in Chinese herbal tradition as Chi Xiao Dou. Its accepted botanical name is Vigna angularis; you may also see the older name Phaseolus angularis. This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried ripe seed. Adzuki is an everyday edible bean widely used in East Asian cooking (for example in red bean paste), so it is a food-familiar botanical. As with any concentrated botanical, take it at the suggested serving; it is not intended for use in pregnancy, and if you take diabetes medication please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Vigna angularis ripe seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The seed inside is identical, and the same notes apply to both.
Is adzuki the same as black bean (Hei Dou) or mung bean?
No - these are different beans, and we list them separately. Our Phaseolus is the adzuki bean, Vigna angularis (older name Phaseolus angularis), the small red bean called Chi Xiao Dou. It is NOT our Hei Dou, which is the black bean Phaseolus vulgaris - a different species. It is also not mung bean (Vigna radiata, "lu dou"). One more point of confusion: the Chinese name Chi Xiao Dou is sometimes applied to rice bean (Vigna umbellata), a close relative; our card is labelled Vigna angularis (adzuki). We name ours clearly so it is not mixed up with these other beans.
How do I use Phaseolus / adzuki liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Phaseolus / adzuki right for everyone? Safety information.
Adzuki bean is an ordinary food bean and has no known side effects when used at sensible amounts. A few sensible cautions still apply. Pregnancy and nursing: as a precaution, do not use concentrated adzuki extract during pregnancy, and consult your practitioner before use while breastfeeding. Diabetes medication: if you take medication that affects blood sugar, use caution and consult your practitioner. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
