Frequently Asked Questions about Red Lentil Extract
What is Red Lentil (Lens culinaris) seed extract?
Red Lentil is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Lens culinaris, the common lentil, a pulse of the Fabaceae (legume) family. The red (or split) lentil - known in South Asia as masoor dal - is the hulled, split form of the same seed. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Please note this is a concentrated liquid extract of the lentil seed, not the culinary lentil grain or dal you cook with. Lentils are a common food and this extract is considered low in toxicity; a few sensible notes are in the safety section below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Lens culinaris seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The seed inside is identical.
Is this the same as cooking lentils?
It is made from the same plant - Lens culinaris, the red or split lentil (masoor dal) - but it is a concentrated liquid extract taken by the drop, not the dried lentil grain you cook into soups or dal. The culinary grain and this extract come from the same seed; they are simply used differently. Note that lentils are naturally gluten free. We label ours clearly as Lens culinaris seed extract so it is not confused with the food product.
How do I use Red Lentil liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Red Lentil right for everyone? Safety information.
Lentils are a common, nutritious food and this extract is considered low in toxicity, but a few sensible notes apply. Digestive comfort: lentils contain fermentable carbohydrates (GOS/FODMAPs) that can cause gas or bloating in sensitive people or those with irritable bowel syndrome, so start low. Allergy: lentil allergy is uncommon but can occur, particularly in children - do not use if you are allergic to lentils or other legumes. Gout: if you have untreated gout or high uric acid, use lentil products in moderation. Pregnancy and nursing: lentils are fine as a food, but avoid concentrated extract amounts during pregnancy and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, including while breastfeeding. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Red Lentil (Lens culinaris) Seed is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
