Frequently Asked Questions about Rooibos Extract
What is Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) extract?
Rooibos, also called red bush, is a broom-like shrub of the pea family (Fabaceae), botanically Aspalathus linearis, endemic to the Cederberg mountains of the Western Cape in South Africa. It is best known as the base of the popular caffeine-free tea, and it is naturally free of caffeine. The part used here is the fine, needle-like leaf. You may see rooibos described as green or red: green rooibos is the unfermented leaf, while the familiar red rooibos has been fermented and oxidised, which develops its colour. The leaf naturally contains polyphenols including aspalathin - these are simply constituents of the raw material. Our extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-leaf liquid extract taken by the drop, not the loose tea, teabags or a brewed beverage, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Aspalathus linearis leaf; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the leaf's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this rooibos tea, and how does it differ from honeybush or red tea?
Three quick clarifications. First, the form: this is a liquid extract of the rooibos leaf, taken by the drop, not the loose tea or teabags you brew - if you are looking for the beverage, this is not that item. Second, honeybush: honeybush is another South African bush tea, but it comes from a different plant, the genus Cyclopia, and it is not the same as rooibos; we do not sell honeybush, and this product is rooibos only. Third, the name red tea: rooibos is sometimes called red tea, but that phrase is also used for Chinese black tea and for hibiscus tea, so the words alone are not a reliable guide - this product is specifically Aspalathus linearis. One more useful distinction is green versus red rooibos: green is the unfermented leaf and red is the fermented, oxidised form. We label the botanical name (Aspalathus linearis) and plant part (leaf) on every page so there is no confusion.
How do I use Rooibos liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Rooibos extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Rooibos is very well tolerated as an everyday beverage, but a concentrated liquid extract is more concentrated than a cup of tea, so do not exceed the suggested serving. There have been isolated reports associating very high intakes of rooibos with raised liver enzymes, so if you have a liver condition or take medication, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. If you are pregnant or nursing, or have a medical condition, also talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Rooibos (Aspalathus Linearis) Leaf is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
