Frequently Asked Questions about Safflower Extract
What is safflower petals extract used for?
Safflower petals extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried florets of Carthamus tinctorius, an annual herbaceous plant in the family Asteraceae widely cultivated throughout temperate and subtropical regions worldwide. The dried floret is a source of hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA), a chalcone C-glycoside that is the primary active flavonoid compound of Carthamus tinctorius florets; safflomin A and safflomin B, minor chalcone glycosides; carthamin, a red dihydrochalcone pigment responsible for the characteristic red-orange color of mature florets; the flavones luteolin and kaempferol; and serotonin derivatives. Safflower florets have a documented history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine as Hong Hua, in Ayurvedic practice, and in Middle Eastern traditional herbal systems. As a dietary supplement, safflower petals extract is used to support general wellness. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between safflower petals drops and safflower petals tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers safflower petals in two liquid formats. The alcohol-free glycerite drops use vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents, making them suitable for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The safflower petals tincture uses grain alcohol as the primary solvent, which is the traditional method of herbal extraction. Both are made from dried Carthamus tinctorius petals (florets), distinct from safflower oil, a cold-pressed seed oil used as a cooking oil.
What is Carthamus tinctorius?
Carthamus tinctorius, commonly known as safflower, false saffron, or dyer's saffron, is an annual herbaceous plant in the family Asteraceae, native to the Middle East and Central Asia, and now cultivated worldwide in temperate and subtropical regions. The plant grows 30-150 cm tall with branched, erect stems, alternate spiny-margined leaves, and tubular florets that emerge yellow-orange and turn deep red-orange as they mature - the color transition that made the plant historically valuable as a natural dye. Safflower is one of the oldest known cultivated plants, with archaeological evidence from ancient Egypt including dried florets found in pharaonic tombs dating back over 3,000 years; it was widely used across the ancient Mediterranean and Middle East as a dye for textiles and as a food colorant. Carthamus tinctorius is a dual-use crop: cultivated on a large scale for its seeds, which yield safflower cooking oil, and separately for its florets, used in traditional herbal systems. The genus name Carthamus is thought to derive from the Arabic qurtum (to dye), and the species epithet tinctorius is Latin for of dyeing. HawaiiPharm's safflower petals tincture is made from dried Carthamus tinctorius florets.
How do I use safflower petals liquid extract?
The suggested use is 20-30 drops taken three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Add the drops to water, tea, or juice before consuming. Shake the bottle well before each use, as natural separation may occur. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Do not exceed the suggested serving size unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Are there any precautions when taking safflower petals supplement?
Consult a healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant or nursing; safflower florets have a traditional history of emmenagogue use in Chinese and Ayurvedic herbal medicine and have not been established as safe in pregnancy. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you take blood-thinning or antiplatelet medications, as safflower floret compounds may have additive antiplatelet effects. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you are scheduled for surgery, as antiplatelet effects may increase bleeding risk. Do not use if you have known allergies to plants in the Asteraceae family, which includes chamomile, echinacea, calendula, and chrysanthemum. Do not exceed the recommended serving size. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
