FEATURES AND DESCRIPTION:
  • GLUTEN FREE
  • Expertly extracted
  • Red Sage Tincture contains ONLY natural ingredients
  • High Quality Red Sage liquid extract - we use classic conventional methods of extraction. We meticulously produce our extracts according to precise standards where each herb is extracted according to the distinct characteristic of each plant.
  • Concentrated Red Sage liquid extract (traditional alcohol tincture)

Red Sage (Salvia Miltiorrhiza) is a perennial of the mint family (Lamiaceae). The part used here is the root, which has a distinctive deep red color - the source of the name red sage. It is one of the most important herbs in traditional Chinese herbalism, where it is called Dan Shen; in English it is known as red sage or Chinese sage. It is a different plant from the common garden sage used in cooking.

  • WHOLE-ROOT LIQUID EXTRACT: Made from the dried root of Salvia miltiorrhiza, carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents rather than an isolated or standardized single compound.

  • TRADITIONAL ALCOHOL EXTRACTION: A classic alcohol-based tincture, made with organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, and water, for a concentrated extract with a long shelf life.

  • THE CHINESE DAN SHEN ROOT: This is Salvia miltiorrhiza, known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Dan Shen. The root naturally contains tanshinones and salvianolic acids.

  • RED SAGE, NOT KITCHEN SAGE: This is Salvia miltiorrhiza (danshen root), distinct from culinary garden sage (Salvia officinalis) and from the unrelated shrub Lantana camara, also called red sage.

  • CLEARLY LABELED: Labeled by botanical name and plant part, so there is no confusion with culinary sage, Lantana, or other plants.

Salvia miltiorrhiza - Red Sage, Dan Shen

Red Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza) is prized in traditional Chinese herbalism for its deep-red root, known there as Dan Shen. Our Red Sage tincture captures the dried root in a concentrated, alcohol-based liquid extract.

About our Red Sage Tincture:

We start with quality red sage root and use a classic, conventional alcohol extraction with organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, and water. It is a whole-root extract - not an isolate - carrying the plant's natural profile. This is specifically Salvia miltiorrhiza, the Chinese danshen.

Suggested use:Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to four times a day, or as directed by your practitioner. Frequently Asked Questions about Red Sage Extract
What is Red Sage / Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) root extract?
Red Sage is a perennial plant of the mint family (Lamiaceae), botanically Salvia miltiorrhiza. The part used here is the root, which is a distinctive deep red color - the source of the name red sage. It is one of the most important herbs in traditional Chinese herbalism, where it is called Dan Shen; in English it is known as red sage or Chinese sage. It is a different plant from the common garden sage used in cooking. The root naturally contains constituents such as tanshinones and salvianolic acids. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Salvia miltiorrhiza root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is red sage the same as the sage I cook with?
No, and this is an important distinction because the name sage is shared by several plants. Our red sage is Salvia miltiorrhiza, the Chinese herb danshen, and we use its red root. That is a different species from common garden or culinary sage, Salvia officinalis, which is the gray-green leaf you cook with - a different plant and a different part. To add to the confusion, the name red sage is also used for an unrelated ornamental shrub, Lantana camara, and sometimes for a red- or purple-leaved variety of garden sage. Ours is none of those - it is specifically Salvia miltiorrhiza, the Chinese danshen root. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Salvia miltiorrhiza) and plant part (root) so there is no confusion with culinary sage, Lantana, or any other plant.
How do I use Red Sage / Danshen liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Please read the important safety note below before use, especially regarding blood-thinning medication. Drink the entire contents.
Is Red Sage / Danshen extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully, because danshen has an important drug interaction. Danshen can increase the effect of blood-thinning and anticoagulant medications and raise the risk of bleeding. This is especially well documented with warfarin. For that reason, do not use this product if you take warfarin, another anticoagulant, or an antiplatelet medication such as aspirin, unless your doctor is guiding you. Stop using it before any surgery or dental procedure. Use caution if you take blood-pressure medication. Do not use during pregnancy. If you are nursing, take any other medication, or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Red Sage (Salvia Miltiorrhiza) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
