Frequently Asked Questions about Sarsaparilla Extract
What is sarsaparilla root extract used for?
Sarsaparilla root extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried root of Smilax medica, a climbing vine in the family Smilacaceae native to Mexico and Central America. The dried root is a source of steroidal saponins including sarsaponin (sarsasaponin) and smilasaponin, glycosides of the sapogenins sarsasapogenin and smilagenin, which are the characteristic secondary metabolites of the Smilax genus; phytosterols including beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol; phenolic acids including caffeic acid, ferulic acid, and related hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives; and organic acids. Smilax medica root was used in the traditional herbal practices of Indigenous peoples of Mexico and Central America for centuries and was introduced to European medical practice in the 16th century by Spanish explorers; it was subsequently incorporated into the pharmacopoeias of several European countries and into the United States Pharmacopoeia. As a dietary supplement, sarsaparilla root extract is used to support general wellness. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between sarsaparilla drops and sarsaparilla tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers sarsaparilla root in two liquid formats. The alcohol-free glycerite drops use vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents, making them suitable for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The sarsaparilla root tincture uses grain alcohol as the primary solvent, which is the traditional method of herbal extraction. Both are made from dried Smilax medica root and are liquid herbal extracts, offering a different format from sarsaparilla capsule and tablet preparations.
What is Smilax medica?
Smilax medica, commonly known as Mexican sarsaparilla, is a climbing vine in the family Smilacaceae native to Mexico and Central America, where it grows in tropical and subtropical forest environments. The plant is a vigorous woody climber with prickly stems, large alternate leaves with prominent parallel veining and tendrils for support, and produces small umbels of greenish flowers on dioecious plants - male and female flowers on separate individuals - followed by clusters of small fleshy berries. The genus name Smilax is the classical Greek name for a plant, possibly derived from smilakine, referring to the scratching or rough quality of the prickly stems. The species epithet medica derives from the Latin medicus, meaning medicinal, reflecting the plant's historical place in herbal medicine. The common name sarsaparilla derives from the Spanish zarzaparrilla: zarza, meaning bramble or briar (from Arabic zarzar), combined with parrilla, a diminutive of parra (grapevine or climbing vine), together meaning a small climbing bramble or briar vine. Several Smilax species are used commercially as sarsaparilla root, including Smilax officinalis (Honduras sarsaparilla), Smilax regelii (Jamaican sarsaparilla), and Smilax aristolochiifolia; HawaiiPharm's sarsaparilla root tincture is made from dried Smilax medica root.
How do I use sarsaparilla liquid extract?
The suggested use is 20-30 drops taken three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Add the drops to water, tea, or juice before consuming. Shake the bottle well before each use, as natural separation may occur. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Do not exceed the suggested serving size unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Are there any precautions when taking sarsaparilla supplement?
Consult a healthcare provider before use if you take digoxin or other cardiac glycosides; saponin compounds in sarsaparilla root have been documented to affect the renal elimination of digoxin and may alter blood levels of cardiac medications. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you take other prescription medications with narrow therapeutic windows, as saponins in Smilax medica root may affect intestinal absorption and renal excretion of some drugs. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you have a history of kidney stones or kidney conditions, as sarsaparilla root contains oxalic acid and oxalate compounds. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant or nursing, as the safety of Smilax medica root extract during pregnancy has not been established. Do not exceed the recommended serving size. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Sarsaparilla (Smilax Medica) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
