Suggested use and dosage for adults: Shake well before use. 20-30 drops (1 ml., one full squeeze of dropper), up to 4 times a day or as directed by your practitioner. The best way to use liquid herbal tinctures is to put the suggested amount in a glass of water, tea, or juice and drink the entire contents. Tinctures can also be administered directly into the mouth without the assistance of water however some tinctures are unpalatable which is why most people prefer to dilute them into a beverage.

The plant is a vigorous woody climber with prickly stems, large alternate leaves with prominent parallel veining and tendrils for support, and produces small umbels of greenish flowers on dioecious plants - male and female flowers on separate individuals - followed by clusters of small fleshy berries. The genus name Smilax is the classical Greek name for a plant, possibly derived from smilakine, referring to the scratching or rough quality of the prickly stems. The species epithet medica derives from the Latin medicus, meaning medicinal, reflecting the plant's historical place in herbal medicine. The common name sarsaparilla derives from the Spanish zarzaparrilla: zarza, meaning bramble or briar (from Arabic zarzar), combined with parrilla, a diminutive of parra (grapevine or climbing vine), together meaning a small climbing bramble or briar vine.
