Serenity Alcohol-Free Drops

This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of three herbs extracted together: the succulent creeping herb of Indian wetlands, the flowering vine of the American Southeast, and the pungent root of the European meadow plant. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product for adults only - it causes drowsiness - please read the safety information below before use.

What is in the blend

  • Brahmi herb - Bacopa monnieri, the water hyssop: a small creeping plant of marshes and pond edges across India and Southeast Asia, with fleshy bright-green leaves and tiny white flowers; the whole herb is used. In some regions the name brahmi is also given to gotu kola (Centella asiatica), a different plant that we sell separately.
  • Passionflower herb - the leaf, stem and flower of the climbing vine of the southeastern United States, known for its elaborate purple-fringed blossoms; the aerial parts, not the fruit, are used here.
  • Valerian root - the root of a tall meadow plant of Europe with clusters of pale pink flowers; the root has a strong, earthy smell that is unmistakable once known.

Why the alcohol-free drops

The three dried herbs are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the bitter, earthy note of the herbs.

What is a glycerite?

A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Brahmi is gentler on the stomach when taken with food. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.

Drops or tincture?

If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same three-herb blend is available as Serenity Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

This blend causes drowsiness and is for adults only. Please read before use.

  • Drowsiness: all three herbs can cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Do not combine with alcohol, sleeping pills, benzodiazepines, sedative antihistamines or other products that slow the nervous system.
  • Seizure disorders: this product is not for seizures or epilepsy. Never replace or stop anticonvulsant medicines, and because sedative herbs can add to their effects, talk to your neurologist before use.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use. Passionflower can stimulate the uterus.
  • Surgery: stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery or anesthesia.
  • Antidepressants: do not combine with MAO-inhibitor antidepressants.
  • Thyroid and cholinergic medicines: brahmi may raise thyroid hormone levels and adds to the effect of cholinergic drugs such as those used for dementia. Consult your doctor if you take them or have a thyroid condition.
  • Stomach: brahmi can cause nausea or loose stools. Take with food.
  • Age: adults only.
  • If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Serenity Alcohol-Free Drops?
Serenity is a three-herb liquid blend: brahmi herb (Bacopa monnieri), passionflower herb (Passiflora incarnata) and valerian root (Valeriana officinalis), extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, with no alcohol. Brahmi is a small creeping plant of Indian wetlands with succulent leaves and white flowers, a classic herb of Ayurveda; passionflower is the climbing vine of the American Southeast with intricate purple-and-white blossoms; valerian is the tall meadow plant of Europe whose pungent root has been gathered for centuries. Each is also sold on its own. It is an herbal glycerite, not a capsule, and it is for adults only. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - this blend causes drowsiness and is not for use with sedatives or in pregnancy.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free drops and the tincture?
Both contain the same three herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. These drops are a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water - no alcohol, a milder and naturally sweet taste that softens the bitter, earthy note of the herbs, best kept refrigerated after opening. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is brahmi the same as gotu kola? How is Serenity different from Tranquil Sleep and Calm Mood?
The brahmi in this blend is Bacopa monnieri, the water hyssop of Indian herbalism. In some regions the name brahmi is also given to gotu kola (Centella asiatica), a different plant from a different family; we sell gotu kola separately. Passionflower here is the aerial herb - leaf, stem and flower - not the fruit. Serenity is a different formula from our Tranquil Sleep and Calm Mood blends, which use other combinations of herbs; brahmi, passionflower and valerian root are each available as single extracts, and passionflower and valerian also appear in our California Poppy blends.
How do I use Serenity Drops?
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Brahmi is gentler on the stomach when taken with food. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.
