Shan Dou Gen (Sophora Tonkinensis) is a shrub in the Fabaceae family that grows up to 1-2 m in height. The pinnately compound leaves are alternately arranged, oval or oblong-ovate. They are about 1-2.5 cm long and 0.5-1.5 cm broad. The upper side is usually scantily pubescent, the underside is covered with short lush grey or brown hairs. The petiole is small and hairy. The calyx is bell-shaped; the yellow-white corolla reminds a butterfly in shape. There are usually 10 stamens. The ovary is pubescent. The pod resembles a chain of beads. The plant is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine.*
