Frequently Asked Questions about Shen Qu Extract
What is Shen Qu / medicated leaven (Massa Medicata Fermentata)?
Shen Qu is a traditional Chinese "medicated leaven" - its pharmacy name is Massa Medicata Fermentata. Unlike most of our extracts, it is NOT a single plant or a single plant part: it is a fermented preparation made by mixing wheat flour and bran with a blend of herbs (recipes vary, but often include Artemisia annua, apricot kernel, adzuki bean, and others) and letting the mixture ferment into cakes, which are then dried. Because the base is wheat, this product CONTAINS WHEAT and is not suitable for anyone with celiac disease or a wheat allergy. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite of this fermented leaven.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same fermented Shen Qu leaven; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The fermented material inside is the same, and the same safety notes - including the wheat content - apply to both.
Is Shen Qu a single herb?
No. This is one of the few items we carry that is not a single botanical. Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) is a compound, fermented preparation - a "leaven" - traditionally made from wheat flour and bran combined with several herbs and then fermented, much like how a sourdough starter or a koji is cultured. That is also why there is no single Latin binomial and no single "plant part" for it; the pharmacopeial name for the whole prepared material is Massa Medicata Fermentata. Because it is built on a wheat base, it contains wheat and gluten.
How is Shen Qu liquid extract used?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because the preparation is built on a wheat base, do not use it if you have celiac disease or a wheat allergy. This alcohol-free glycerite has a milder carrier. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Shen Qu right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Wheat and gluten: Shen Qu is made on a base of wheat flour and bran, so it CONTAINS WHEAT and is not suitable for anyone with celiac disease or a wheat allergy - despite any older "gluten free" wording, please treat this as a wheat-containing product. Pregnancy and nursing: because it is a mildly active fermented preparation, consult your practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Digestion: if you have a weak constitution without a feeling of food "stuck," use it cautiously and with guidance. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or children. Store as directed on the label. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
