What is Shepherd's Purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) herb extract?
Shepherd's Purse is a small annual plant of the mustard or cabbage family (Brassicaceae), botanically Capsella bursa-pastoris. It gets its name from its small, heart-shaped seed pods, which look like the little pouch or purse a shepherd might carry. The part used here is the herb - the aerial parts. It is also known as mother's heart. Although it is one of the most common weeds in the world, it is also eaten as a wild green - in Chinese cooking it is called ji cai. Our raw material is grown in Bulgaria. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-herb liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Capsella bursa-pastoris herb; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the herb's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the weed, and is it the same as the edible green?
Two useful clarifications. First, the weed: shepherd's purse is one of the most common lawn and garden weeds, and much of what people look up about it is how to get rid of it. Our product is different - it is the herbal extract of the plant, taken by the drop, and it is not a weed-control product. Second, the food: shepherd's purse is also eaten as a wild green, and in Chinese cooking it is known as ji cai and used in fillings and soups. Our product is a concentrated liquid extract of the herb rather than the fresh culinary vegetable. The plant is also called mother's heart. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Capsella bursa-pastoris) and plant part (herb) so there is no confusion with the weed or the edible green.
