Frequently Asked Questions about Shu Di Huang Extract
What is Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang) extract?
Prepared Rehmannia root extract is a dietary supplement made from the prepared root of Rehmannia glutinosa, a plant of the family Orobanchaceae known in English as Chinese foxglove. In traditional Chinese herbalism this prepared root is called Shu Di Huang, and in pharmacy references it appears as Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata; it is the root that has been repeatedly steamed until dark, soft and sticky. Our extract is made specifically from this prepared root and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the root's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated single-compound product such as catalpol. We label the product by its botanical name and preparation so it is clear this is prepared Rehmannia, distinct from the raw root and from other plants called foxglove.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same prepared Rehmannia glutinosa root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this prepared or raw rehmannia, and is it real foxglove?
It is the prepared root, and it is not the poisonous foxglove. In traditional Chinese herbalism the same Rehmannia glutinosa root is used in two different ways: the raw, unprocessed root is a separate herb called Sheng Di Huang (raw rehmannia, or Di Huang), while the root that has been repeatedly steamed until dark and sticky is Shu Di Huang - and Shu Di Huang, the prepared root, is what this product is. They are treated as distinct preparations, so this is not the same as a raw rehmannia product. Rehmannia is also sometimes called Chinese foxglove because of its flowers, but it is not the true foxglove (Digitalis purpurea or Digitalis lanata), the garden plant used to make heart drugs; Rehmannia is a different plant and does not contain those cardiac compounds. And it is a whole-root extract, not an isolated constituent such as catalpol. We label the product clearly so there is no confusion between prepared and raw rehmannia, or between Rehmannia and true foxglove.
How do I use Prepared Rehmannia Root liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Prepared Rehmannia Root extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Prepared Rehmannia is a rich, cloying herb that some people find hard to digest, so those with a sensitive or weak digestive system may notice bloating, poor appetite, or loose stools; it is best not to exceed the suggested serving size. It may also modestly affect blood sugar, so if you take medication that lowers blood sugar, monitor accordingly and speak with a practitioner. It is best avoided during pregnancy and nursing unless supervised by a qualified practitioner. If you take any prescription medication or are managing a health condition, consult a practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
