Sleep Support Alcohol-Free Drops
Sleep Support Alcohol-Free Glycerite, Valerian Root, Hops Flower, Blue Vervain Herb, Wild Lettuce HerbSleep Support Alcohol-Free Drops
This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of four herbs extracted together in equal parts. Valerian and hops are the classic evening pair of European herbalism; blue vervain and wild lettuce are traditional herbs of the same character. All four can cause drowsiness - please read the safety information below before use. Each herb is also sold on its own.
- Valerian, root - Valeriana officinalis root (Caprifoliaceae)
- Hops, flower - Humulus lupulus strobile (Cannabaceae)
- Blue vervain, herb - Verbena hastata aerial parts (Verbenaceae)
- Wild lettuce, herb - Lactuca virosa herb (Asteraceae)
- Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - liquid drops. Other ingredients: vegetable glycerin, purified water
- Origin: Responsibly sourced botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- Valerian - the pale, stringy root of a tall pink-flowered meadow plant of Europe and Asia, famous for its pungent, earthy smell; one of the oldest herbs of the European evening tradition.
- Hops - the papery green cones of the hop vine, the same flowers that flavor beer; they carry bitter resins and the flavonoid 8-prenylnaringenin, a strong plant estrogen (see the safety note).
- Blue vervain - a slender North American wetland plant with spikes of small violet flowers; the whole flowering herb is used.
- Wild lettuce - a tall, bitter wild relative of garden lettuce whose milky sap dries into lactucarium; it contains no opioid compounds despite the old nickname "lettuce opium".
Why the alcohol-free drops
The four dried herbs are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the earthy bitterness of valerian and hops.
What is a glycerite?
A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. It causes drowsiness - take it in the evening, do not drive or operate machinery after taking it, and do not combine it with alcohol. Use it for short periods rather than continuously. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.
Drops or tincture?
If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same four-herb blend is available as Sleep Support Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
All four herbs in this blend can cause drowsiness. Please read before use.
- Drowsiness: do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Do not combine with alcohol, sedatives, benzodiazepines, antihistamines or other products that slow the nervous system - the effects add up.
- Surgery: stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery or anesthesia.
- Hormone-sensitive conditions: hops has strong estrogen-like activity. Avoid if you have a hormone-sensitive condition such as breast, uterine or ovarian cancer or endometriosis, or take hormone therapy.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use - blue vervain and hops in particular are traditionally avoided in pregnancy.
- Duration: use in short courses. Stopping suddenly after weeks of daily high-dose valerian has caused withdrawal-type symptoms.
- Liver: rare cases of liver injury have been reported with valerian products. Stop and see a doctor if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes or dark urine.
- Blood pressure and iron: blue vervain may lower blood pressure and reduce iron absorption - consult your doctor if you take blood-pressure medicine, and take iron supplements two hours apart.
- Serving: do not exceed the label serving. Large amounts of wild lettuce have caused poisoning, with dry mouth, dilated pupils, dizziness and rapid heartbeat - if these occur, stop and seek medical advice.
- Depression: consult your practitioner before use if you have a history of depression (hops).
- Allergies: wild lettuce is a daisy-family (Asteraceae) plant - avoid if you are allergic to ragweed or daisies.
- Age: not for children.
- If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
