What is Blackberry Root (Rubus armeniacus) extract?

Blackberry is a thorny shrub of the rose family (Rosaceae). The plant here is Rubus armeniacus, the Himalayan or Armenian blackberry, part of the broad Rubus fruticosus group of brambles. Most people know blackberry for its berries, but the part used in this product is the root, not the fruit and not the leaf. The root is naturally rich in tannins, especially ellagitannins - these are simply constituents of the raw material. Blackberry root has a long history of use as a herbal tea. Our extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, both from ethically sourced material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Note that we also sell blackberry leaf as a separate product; this one is the root.

What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Rubus armeniacus root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.

Is this the berry, and how is it different from blackberry leaf or raspberry?

Three quick clarifications, because the blackberry family is easy to mix up. First, the part: this is the blackberry root. It is not blackberry fruit, blackberry juice or a berry supplement, and it is not the leaf either - it is a liquid extract of the dried root. Second, our own range: we sell blackberry leaf as a separate product, made from Rubus fruticosus leaf; if you want the leaf rather than the root, look for that item. The two are closely related - our root is Rubus armeniacus, which belongs to the same broad bramble group as Rubus fruticosus - but they are offered as distinct articles by plant part. Third, the neighbours: raspberry is a different plant, Rubus idaeus, and Fu Pen Zi is the Chinese raspberry, Rubus chingii - both are separate species we sell under their own names. One more note on searching: Himalayan blackberry is a well-known invasive plant, so a general search will often bring up removal and gardening material rather than herbal products. We label the botanical name (Rubus armeniacus) and plant part (root) on every page so there is no confusion.

Is Blackberry Root extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.

Blackberry root is generally well tolerated, but it is not right for everyone. The root is very rich in tannins - more so than the leaf - and a concentrated liquid extract is more concentrated than a cup of root tea, so taking more than the suggested serving may cause stomach upset or nausea. Tannins can also reduce the absorption of iron and some other minerals, so if you take an iron supplement or a mineral-rich meal, it is sensible to separate them from this extract by an hour or two. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use.
