What is Squash (Cucurbita pepo) seed extract?
Squash is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Cucurbita pepo, a plant of the Cucurbitaceae (gourd) family. Cucurbita pepo is the species behind field pumpkins and many squashes, so its seeds are the familiar edible pumpkin seeds (pepitas). This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. These are food seeds, so this is offered simply as a botanical seed extract. One point worth knowing: because "squash" and "pumpkin" are both Cucurbita pepo, squash seed and pumpkin seed are the same botanical - so if you have seen this as either name, it is the same seed. Please see the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cucurbita pepo seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The seed inside is identical.
Is squash seed the same as pumpkin seed?
Essentially yes - and that is worth explaining. Both squash and pumpkin here are the same botanical species, Cucurbita pepo, and both products use the seed. "Pumpkin" and "squash" are common names for different cultivated forms of the same plant, so squash seed and pumpkin seed are the same thing botanically (the seeds sold as pepitas). We note this so that our squash listing and any pumpkin-seed listing are not mistaken for two different botanicals - they are the same Cucurbita pepo seed. It is different, though, from watermelon seed, which comes from a separate plant (Citrullus lanatus).
How do I use Squash liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.

Pumpkin and squash seeds are ordinary foods with a good safety record for most people, but a few notes apply. Allergy: if you are allergic to pumpkin or squash, do not use this - reactions can include skin rashes such as eczema or contact dermatitis, and rarely breathing symptoms. Digestion: taking more than the suggested serving may cause stomach pain, cramps or indigestion - keep to the serving. Blood pressure: large amounts may have a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect, so take care if you already run low or feel faint. Pregnancy and nursing: usual food amounts are considered fine, but do NOT use concentrated medicinal amounts during pregnancy or while breastfeeding without professional advice. This is a food-seed extract, not a treatment for any condition - do not use it to self-treat a medical condition; see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.
