Asparagus (Asparagus cochinchinensis), in Chinese medicine known as Tian Men Dong belongs to the asparagus family. It is a perennial plant growing up to 1.5 m high. Asparagus is distributed in some countries of East Asia: near seashores in Japan, and in thinly forested slopes, roadsides and waste fields in China. It blooms in May and June; the seeds ripen in September. As an edible plant, it has long been known in Europe since the time of Ancient Rome. Young sprouts up to 20 cm high are eaten. They are harvested in April-May. This plant is not only medicinal and edible but also decorative.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tian Men Dong Extract
What is Tian Men Dong (Asparagus cochinchinensis) root extract?
Tian Men Dong is a climbing perennial of the asparagus family (Asparagaceae), botanically Asparagus cochinchinensis, native to China, Korea, Japan and neighbouring regions. It is also written Tian Dong, and an older botanical synonym is Asparagus lucidus. In English it is usually called Chinese asparagus root or wild asparagus root. The part used is the tuberous root, which is dug, cleaned and dried. It has a long history of use in Chinese herbal tradition. The root naturally contains polysaccharides, amino acids and flavonoids such as rutin, quercetin and kaempferol, together with inulin - these are simply constituents of the raw material. Our extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, both from ethically sourced, wild harvested raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Asparagus cochinchinensis root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is Tian Men Dong the same as shatavari or as garden asparagus?
No - three different plants share the genus Asparagus, and it is worth being precise. Ours is Asparagus cochinchinensis, the Chinese herb Tian Men Dong, native to East Asia. Shatavari is Asparagus racemosus, a separate species used in the Ayurvedic tradition of India; we sell it as its own product under its own name, and it is not what you are looking at here. Garden or culinary asparagus is Asparagus officinalis, the vegetable you cook and eat, and it is a third species again. All three are relatives within the same genus, but they are not interchangeable and are not the same raw material. There is also a difference of form worth noting: Tian Men Dong is often sold as whole dried root, as a powder, or candied in the traditional way, whereas our product is a liquid extract of the root that you take by the drop. We label the botanical name (Asparagus cochinchinensis) and plant part (root) on every page so there is no confusion.
How do I use Tian Men Dong liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Tian Men Dong extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Tian Men Dong is not right for everyone. Because it belongs to the asparagus family, people who react to asparagus - or to related plants such as onion, garlic and other lily-family species - may also react to it, so use caution if you have these sensitivities. The root naturally contains steroidal saponins, which can irritate the digestive tract if you take more than the suggested serving; nausea or loose stools are the usual sign. In the traditional Chinese view this root is considered cooling and moistening, and it is customarily avoided by people with loose stools or ongoing digestive upset. There is not enough information on use during pregnancy or while nursing, so avoid it in those situations unless a qualified practitioner advises otherwise. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
