What is Tormentil (Potentilla erecta) extract?
Tormentil is the common name for Potentilla erecta, a small wildflower of the rose family (Rosaceae) with bright yellow flowers and a knotted red rootstock; it is also called Tormentilla, Septfoil, and Shepherd's Knot, and its former botanical name is Potentilla tormentilla. It is a traditional European astringent herb, naturally rich in tannins. This is a liquid extract offered here as an alcohol-free vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a botanical extract and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease; please read the safety note below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Potentilla erecta; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, a good choice for those avoiding alcohol; the tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. Choose whichever suits you. The plant material inside is identical, and the same notes apply to both.
Is Tormentil the same as Cinquefoil or American Bloodroot?
Tormentil is Potentilla erecta, which we carry here (also sold as Tormentilla). Cinquefoil is Potentilla reptans, a related species in the same genus, which we list separately - they are different species. Importantly, although tormentil is sometimes nicknamed "bloodroot" in old European usage because of its red rootstock, it is NOT the same as American Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis), which is a completely different, more hazardous plant. This product is Potentilla erecta. The traditional medicinal part of tormentil is the rhizome (rootstock); if you are comparing products, check the plant part on the label.
How is Tormentil extract used?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops shown on the label, in a little water or juice, up to the suggested frequency. Because tormentil is high in tannins, take it with plenty of water, and keep iron supplements and medicines at least two hours apart from it. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and keep out of reach of children.

Tormentil has a long history of traditional use and testing has generally found it safe at normal amounts, with few side effects. Tannins: it is very high in tannins, which can cause mild stomach upset or heartburn in sensitive people and can reduce the absorption of iron and some medicines - so take it with water and separate it from supplements and drugs by a couple of hours. Pregnancy and nursing: consult a healthcare professional before use. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to infants or children without medical advice. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Store as directed on the label.
