Frequently Asked Questions about Vanilla Extract
What is Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia) bean extract?
Vanilla is a liquid extract of the cured bean of Vanilla planifolia, a tropical climbing orchid of the family Orchidaceae. The vanilla "bean" is the plant's long seed pod, cured until it develops its familiar sweet aroma, whose main compound is vanillin along with hundreds of other natural aromatic constituents. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-bean liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is cultivated in Indonesia and each batch is gluten free.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Vanilla planifolia bean; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this the same as kitchen vanilla extract, or tonka bean?
It is related to kitchen vanilla but sold as a botanical liquid extract, and it is definitely not tonka. Culinary "vanilla extract" is the same orchid bean prepared as a flavoring for baking; our product is the same botanical, Vanilla planifolia, offered as a supplement-style liquid extract taken by the drop rather than a cooking flavoring, though both come from the cured bean. Tonka bean is something completely different: it is the seed of Dipteryx odorata, a South American tree, and it is used as a vanilla-like substitute, but it contains a high level of coumarin and is restricted by the FDA as a food additive. Real vanilla (Vanilla planifolia) contains no coumarin, its aroma comes from vanillin, and it is generally recognized as safe. We sell tonka separately and clearly labeled; this product is the true vanilla orchid bean, not tonka. We label the botanical name, plant part (bean) and format (liquid extract) so there is no confusion.
How do I use Vanilla bean liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Vanilla extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Vanilla is a food-grade flavoring and is generally recognized as safe and very well tolerated, but a concentrated liquid extract should still be used sensibly and not taken above the suggested serving. As with any supplement, if you are pregnant or nursing, take medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains 48% alcohol by volume and should be stored in a cool, dark place. As a note on sourcing, vanilla is a cultivated orchid crop and we use responsibly sourced, cultivated beans. ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Vanilla (Vanilla Planifolia) Bean is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
