Vision Formula Tincture
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of three ingredients extracted together: the inner bark of an Amazonian vine, a lacquered forest mushroom, and the golden root of an Arctic succulent. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product for adults only, with several important cautions - please read the safety information below before use.
- Cat's claw, inner bark - Uncaria tomentosa inner bark (Rubiaceae)
- Reishi, whole mushroom - Ganoderma lucidum fruiting body (Ganodermataceae)
- Rhodiola, root - Rhodiola rosea root (Crassulaceae)
- Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
- Origin: Responsibly sourced botanicals (cat's claw from Peru, reishi cultivated in Taiwan, rhodiola from Canada). Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- Cat's claw inner bark - the inner bark of a woody vine of the Peruvian Amazon, named for the curved thorns at the base of its leaves. This is Uncaria tomentosa, the species used in most research - a different plant from Uncaria guianensis, and unrelated to devil's claw despite the similar name.
- Reishi mushroom - the glossy, reddish-brown, kidney-shaped bracket fungus of East Asian hardwood forests, known as lingzhi in China; the whole fruiting body is used.
- Rhodiola root - the thick golden root of a succulent that clings to cliffs and tundra across the Arctic and high mountains; when cut it smells faintly of roses, which gives the species its name.
Why a tincture
The three dried ingredients are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a bitter, woody taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving; rhodiola is best taken earlier in the day. Do not use continuously for more than a few months without a practitioner. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same blend is available as Vision Formula Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The ingredients and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
This blend is unsuitable with immunosuppressant medicines, blood thinners and antidepressants, and in pregnancy. Adults only. Please read before use.
- Immunosuppressants and autoimmune conditions: cat's claw and reishi can stimulate the immune system. Do not use if you take immunosuppressant medicines, including after a transplant, or if you have an autoimmune condition.
- Prescription medicines: cat's claw blocks the liver enzyme CYP3A4 and can raise the levels of HIV protease inhibitors, cyclosporine, some benzodiazepines and other drugs. Ask your pharmacist before combining.
- Bleeding and surgery: cat's claw and reishi can slow blood clotting. Do not combine with blood thinners, aspirin or NSAIDs without medical advice, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
- Antidepressants and bipolar disorder: rhodiola acts on serotonin and other brain chemicals. Do not combine with antidepressants or MAO inhibitors, and do not use if you have bipolar disorder.
- Liver: reishi has been linked to rare liver injury, especially with alcohol. Stop and see a doctor if you notice dark urine, yellowing skin or eyes, or stomach pain.
- Blood pressure and blood sugar: cat's claw and reishi can lower both. Use caution with related medication.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
- Sleep: rhodiola may cause restlessness or sleeplessness. Take it earlier in the day.
- Age and duration: adults only; not for continuous long-term use.
- Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
