Wild Lettuce and Valerian Alcohol-Free Drops
Wild Lettuce and Valerian Alcohol-Free Glycerite, Wild Lettuce Herb, Valerian RootWild Lettuce and Valerian Alcohol-Free Drops
Two European herbs, one bottle: the alcohol-free glycerite of wild lettuce herb from the Albanian hills and valerian root from Polish farms, macerated together in equal parts. Both plants are sold separately as single extracts. This is a traditional herbal preparation for adults only; it makes you drowsy, the serving on the label is a hard limit, and the safety information below should be read before the first use.
- Wild lettuce, herb - Lactuca virosa herb (Asteraceae)
- Valerian, root - Valeriana officinalis root (Caprifoliaceae)
- Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - liquid drops. Other ingredients: vegetable glycerin, purified water
- Origin: Wild lettuce from Albania, valerian from Poland; responsibly sourced. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
Two herbs, two stories
- Wild lettuce - Lactuca virosa is the rangy, prickly-leaved ancestor-cousin of salad lettuce; snap a stem and a bitter white latex oozes out. Nineteenth-century pharmacists dried that latex into lactucarium and called the plant opium lettuce - a nickname that has outlived its accuracy, because there is no opium and no opioid compound in the plant, only bitter sesquiterpene lactones such as lactucin.
- Valerian - Valeriana officinalis sends up head-high stems topped with clusters of pale pink flowers in early summer; the part used is the root, dug in autumn, whose earthy smell is famously strong (cats love it, most people do not).
About the alcohol-free drops
Here the two herbs are extracted in vegetable glycerin and purified water instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, sweet plant-derived liquid that carries the water-soluble constituents and takes the edge off wild lettuce's bitterness and valerian's earthy smell. Because it preserves less strongly than alcohol, the bottle belongs in the refrigerator once opened; the exact glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.
Directions
Shake the bottle. Add the number of drops printed on the label to a little water, juice or tea and drink. Stay within the label serving and frequency, and do not use it day after day for long periods without a practitioner. Because it causes drowsiness, do not drive or operate machinery afterwards. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.

Important safety information - please read before use
Adults only. Both herbs are sedating, and wild lettuce is harmful in excess. Please read before use.
- Sedation: expect drowsiness. No driving or machinery afterwards, and no alcohol, sleeping pills, benzodiazepines, sedative antihistamines or other nervous-system depressants alongside it.
- Serving limit: too much wild lettuce has caused dilated pupils, a racing heartbeat, agitation, blurred vision and trouble urinating. Never exceed the label serving; if any of these appear, stop and get medical help.
- Wild lettuce is not an opiate and not a pain medicine. Never use it in place of a prescribed drug.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
- Anesthesia and surgery: valerian adds to the effect of anesthetics. Stop at least two weeks before any scheduled procedure.
- Liver: rare liver reactions have been reported with valerian. Dark urine, yellowed skin or eyes, or stomach pain mean stop and see a doctor.
- Allergy: wild lettuce belongs to the daisy family (Asteraceae); avoid it if ragweed, chrysanthemums or daisies trigger reactions.
- Duration: for occasional, short-term use; not for continuous use.
- If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
