Blood Pressure Support Alcohol-Free Drops
This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of four herbs extracted together in equal parts. Hawthorn and motherwort are two of the classic herbs of European tradition; marshmallow and flax are mild, mucilage-rich plants. All four are also sold on their own. It is a traditional herbal product and not a substitute for any medication your doctor has prescribed - please read the safety information below before use.
- Hawthorn, leaf and flower - Crataegus laevigata flowering tops (Rosaceae) - the leaf and flower, not the berry
- Motherwort, herb - Leonurus cardiaca aerial parts (Lamiaceae)
- Marshmallow, leaf - Althaea officinalis leaf (Malvaceae) - the leaf, not the root
- Flax, seed - Linum usitatissimum seed (Linaceae)

What is in the blend
- Hawthorn - the thorny hedgerow shrub of Europe with white May blossom and red autumn haws; this blend uses the flowering leaf-and-flower tops, the parts described in the European pharmacopoeial monographs.
- Motherwort - a tall, bitter mint-family herb with whorls of small pink flowers, named for its long history in the care of mothers; the flowering herb is used.
- Marshmallow - the soft, velvety leaf of the pink-flowered mallow of European marshes, rich in mucilage. This blend uses the leaf; the root is a separate product.
- Flax - the small brown seed of the flax plant, the same seed used as a food, rich in mucilage, oil and lignans.
Why the alcohol-free drops
The four dried herbs are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the bitterness of motherwort, and the marshmallow and flax add a little of their slippery texture.
What is a glycerite?
A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs - a good match for mucilage-rich plants. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Take it at least two hours apart from any medication (see the safety note). Motherwort can be mildly relaxing, so see how it affects you before driving. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.
Drops or tincture?
If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same four-herb blend is available as Blood Pressure Support Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
This blend contains hawthorn and motherwort, which can interact with heart and blood-pressure medication. Please read before use.
- Not a substitute for medication: this is an herbal product, not a medicine. If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, a heart condition or any cardiovascular problem, it must be managed by your doctor. Do not use this blend in place of prescribed treatment, and do not stop or change any medication on your own.
- Heart and blood-pressure medication: hawthorn and motherwort can interact with digoxin, beta-blockers, nitrates, calcium-channel blockers, antihypertensives, antiarrhythmics and erectile-dysfunction drugs. Do not use this blend with any of them without your doctor.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use - motherwort stimulates the uterus, and hawthorn is traditionally avoided in pregnancy.
- Surgery: stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery.
- Blood thinners: motherwort may slow blood clotting - consult your doctor if you take warfarin or similar.
- Hormone-sensitive conditions: flax seed contains lignans with mild estrogen-like activity - consult your practitioner if you have a hormone-sensitive condition.
- Serving: do not exceed the label serving - concentrated flax seed contains small amounts of cyanogenic compounds.
- Medication timing: marshmallow and flax mucilage can slow the absorption of medicines - take this blend at least two hours apart from any medication.
- Drowsiness: motherwort may cause mild drowsiness in some people.
- Blood sugar: marshmallow may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
- Age: not for children.
