Frequently Asked Questions about Xian Mao Extract
What is Xian Mao (Curculigo orchioides) root extract?
Xian Mao is a liquid extract of the dried root of Curculigo orchioides, a plant of the family Hypoxidaceae known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Xian Mao, in Ayurveda as Kali Musli (black musli), and in English as golden eye grass. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the root's natural constituents, including phenolic glycosides such as curculigoside, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced. Please note this is Kali Musli (black musli), a different plant from Safed Musli (white musli, Chlorophytum borivilianum). Read the important safety information below before use - this herb is traditionally considered warming and slightly toxic and is not for long-term use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Curculigo orchioides root; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is Xian Mao / Kali Musli the same as Safed Musli?
No. Xian Mao is Curculigo orchioides, known in Ayurveda as Kali Musli, meaning "black musli" (family Hypoxidaceae). Safed Musli means "white musli" and is a completely different plant, Chlorophytum borivilianum (family Asparagaceae), which we sell separately. The two share the word "musli" and both appear in traditional formulas, but they are different botanicals from different families, so it is important to check the botanical name. We identify this product as Curculigo orchioides (Kali Musli / Xian Mao / golden eye grass) so there is no confusion with Safed Musli or with other roots.
How do I use Xian Mao / Curculigo root liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Because this herb is traditionally considered warming and slightly toxic, use small amounts: the suggested serving for adults is 10 to 20 drops in 2 oz of water, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, and it is best used short-term rather than continuously. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do NOT exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below carefully before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Xian Mao right for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully. Xian Mao (Curculigo orchioides) is traditionally described as warming and slightly toxic, and it is not intended for long-term use, so use only small amounts, short-term, and preferably under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Two specific points: (1) do not exceed the suggested serving - overuse has been associated with numbness or swelling of the tongue; (2) prolonged or high-dose use may affect the liver, so do not use it long-term, use caution if you take medications that can affect the liver (such as acetaminophen or statins), and be aware it may affect how some medications are processed by the body - consult your practitioner. Do NOT use during pregnancy or nursing. If you take any medication or have any medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Excessive consumption may impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains 48% alcohol by volume and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
