Xin Yi, Magnolia (Magnolia Lilliflora) is a shrub 2-3 (up to 5) m high with a spherical, slightly stretched to the sides crown. The branches, strongly intertwined with each other, are covered with a light gray smooth bark. Shoots are pubescent at the tops, then glabrous. Buds are greenish, long, softly pubescent. Leaves are broadly elliptic or obovate, 15-20 cm long, 8-10 cm wide. The flowers are narrow-gouged, 3-4 cm in diameter, red-crimson outside and white or almost white inside. The fruit is a cylindrical, wine-red composite leaflet up to 9 cm long.*

What is Xin Yi / Magnolia Flower Bud (Magnolia liliiflora) extract?

Xin Yi is a liquid extract of the dried flower bud of Magnolia liliiflora (also written liliflora, and now placed in the genus Yulania), a small magnolia of the family Magnoliaceae. In traditional Chinese herbalism the flower bud is called Xin Yi Hua. The herb is prepared from several magnolia species - the official pharmacopoeia sources are Magnolia biondii, M. denudata and M. sprengeri, and M. liliflora is used in some areas; ours is labeled as M. liliiflora. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-flower-bud liquid extract carrying the bud's natural constituents, including its aromatic volatile oil and lignans, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced. Please note this is the magnolia FLOWER BUD, different from magnolia bark, and please read the important safety notes below - especially the pregnancy warning.

What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Magnolia liliiflora flower bud; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.

How is Xin Yi different from Magnolia Bark (Hou Pu) and your other Magnolia products?

They are all magnolias but different species and, importantly, different plant parts. This product, Xin Yi, is the FLOWER BUD of Magnolia liliiflora (Xin Yi Hua). Magnolia Bark, or Hou Pu, is the BARK of Magnolia officinalis - a different species and a different part, used differently. We also sell a Magnolia product that is the bark of Magnolia virginiana (sweetbay). And none of these are the ornamental garden magnolias grown purely as flowering trees. Because they share the "magnolia" name, we label each by botanical name and plant part so it is clear which one you are getting. If your recipe or practitioner specified magnolia bark or Hou Pu, choose that page instead; this page is the flower bud.

How do I use Xin Yi / magnolia flower-bud liquid extract?

Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to three times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and use it short-term. Is Xin Yi right for everyone? Important safety information.

Magnolia flower bud is considered possibly safe for most people when used short-term; its safety beyond about six weeks of continuous use is not established, so keep to the suggested serving and use it for short periods rather than continuously. High doses may cause dizziness or headache, so do not exceed the suggested serving. The most important caution: do NOT use during pregnancy - magnolia flower bud taken by mouth is considered unsafe in pregnancy because it may cause the uterus to contract, which could lead to miscarriage; avoid it throughout pregnancy unless specifically directed by a qualified practitioner. Consult a practitioner if nursing. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.
