Frequently Asked Questions about Yi Yi Ren Extract
What is Yi Yi Ren, Job's Tears (Coix lacryma-jobi)?
Yi Yi Ren is the seed of Job's Tears, Coix lacryma-jobi, a cereal grass of the family Poaceae. The English name is Job's Tears; it is also called adlay, coix seed, hato mugi in Japanese, and sometimes Chinese pearl barley. In traditional Chinese herbalism the seed is called Yi Yi Ren. This is an edible grain, cooked and eaten across East and Southeast Asia much like a grain or in soups, and the part used here is the dried seed. Our raw material is grown in Vietnam. The extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-seed liquid extract carrying the grain's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. It is naturally gluten-free. Please read the identity and safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Coix lacryma-jobi seed; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the grain's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the same as pearl barley? And Job's Tears vs Yi Yi Ren?
A few clarifications, because the names overlap. First, Job's Tears and Yi Yi Ren are the same thing - Job's Tears is the English name and Yi Yi Ren is the traditional Chinese name for the seed of Coix lacryma-jobi; adlay is another common name. Second, and importantly, this is not true barley. It is sometimes marketed as "Chinese pearl barley," but botanically it is Coix, a different grass from real barley, Hordeum vulgare - so "pearl barley" in a Western kitchen sense is a different grain, and we sell true barley and its sprout (Mai Ya) as separate products. Third, the edible grain used here is the soft, hulled seed eaten as food; the very hard, shiny seeds sometimes strung as decorative "Job's tears" beads are the wild ornamental form, not a food. Our product is specifically the edible Coix lacryma-jobi seed. We label the botanical name and plant part on every page so there is no confusion.
How do I use Job's Tears (Yi Yi Ren) liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Job's Tears extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Job's Tears is an edible grain and is regarded as low in toxicity. One important precaution: do not use this product during pregnancy. If you are nursing or taking any medications, consult your healthcare practitioner before use. It is not intended for young children. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
