Frequently Asked Questions about Zhi Gan Cao Extract
What is Zhi Gan Cao (prepared licorice) extract?
Zhi Gan Cao extract is a dietary supplement made from the root of Glycyrrhiza uralensis, the Chinese licorice plant of the legume family (Fabaceae). In traditional Chinese herbalism, Zhi Gan Cao refers specifically to the prepared, honey-fried form of the root, as distinct from raw licorice, which is called Gan Cao; in pharmacy references it appears as Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata. Our extract is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the root's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not isolated glycyrrhizin, the compound naturally present in licorice. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is the prepared form of Glycyrrhiza uralensis.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Glycyrrhiza uralensis root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, giving it a naturally sweet taste that suits those who avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
How is Zhi Gan Cao different from raw Chinese licorice (Gan Cao)?
Both come from the same plant, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, but they refer to different traditional preparations of the root. Gan Cao is the raw, unprocessed licorice root. Zhi Gan Cao is the prepared form, traditionally made by stir-frying the root with honey - which is why it is sometimes called honey-fried or prepared licorice. In traditional Chinese herbalism the two forms are regarded somewhat differently and are chosen for different formulas. HawaiiPharm offers both as separate products, so you can select the one that matches what you are looking for; this listing is the Zhi Gan Cao (prepared) form. Whichever you choose, it is a whole-root extract of Glycyrrhiza uralensis, not an isolated single compound, and it is a different plant from European licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra).
How do I use Zhi Gan Cao liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Zhi Gan Cao extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Licorice root, including Zhi Gan Cao, naturally contains glycyrrhizin, and it is not appropriate for everyone. Do not use if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, or low potassium, and avoid it during pregnancy and nursing. Because glycyrrhizin can affect fluid and potassium balance, licorice may interact with diuretics, digoxin, corticosteroids, and blood-pressure medications, so talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you take any medicines. Do not use in large amounts or for long periods. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods.
